Holiday Gift Ideas Part 2 – Bedding

Thursday, November 26th, 2009

Order online or by phone

Happy Thanksgiving everyone! I am so very thankful so many of you have chosen to shop at Red Barn Mercantile for your home and holidays. The kids are still asleep, and the holiday craziness is still a few hours away, so I thought I would take a moment to offer some more gift ideas.

One of my favorite holiday memories — and one I am passing on to my children — is waking up on Thanksgiving Day, snuggling up on the couch and watching the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade. Dan will make breakfast as the kids and I snuggle under our giant comfy quilt downstairs. My son has recently become a fan of Spiderman, so I know he’ll love the giant Spiderman balloon, and my daughter has worn out the Peanuts Thanksgiving video — she’s sleeping with Snoopy tucked under her arm right now. So she’ll squeal when the Peanuts characters float by. And they’ll both impatiently watch the entire parade waiting for you know who to make his first TV appearance of the year.

I’m sure you have similar Thanksgiving memories, or remember cuddling up with your favorite duvet or quilt. If you want to relive those moments everyday, or want to pass along the comfort of quality bedding, then I would suggest our new designs by John Robshaw. Each duvet, quilt and coverlet is prewashed and rewashed for extra softness. The prints are cool and colorful. And once you feel the 300 thread count percale cotton sheets you’ll want to wrap yourself up in them too. So without further ado, today’s gift list includes:

Also included in the photo above is the ecru Pinwheel quilt by Mateo, $495. It isn’t available online but you can order it by phone at 703-838-0355 or buy it in person at the store.

We won’t be open today, I’ve got snuggling and cooking to do, but we will be open tomorrow from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. And don’t forget our Black Friday 10 percent discount — buy from one Old Town Boutique District store and your receipt will get you 10 percent off your total purchase at any other participating store. For a complete list of stores, and more information, visit the Old Town Boutique District Web site.

Looking forward to seeing you all this Holiday season.  Happy Thanksgiving!

Take care,

Amy

Serena and Lily Kate Crib Set, click to view moreALEXANDRIA, VA — Visit Red Barn Mercantile April 25 to see the latest bedding styles from Serena & Lily. Our designers and a Serena & Lily representative will be on hand to discuss creating the perfect sleep space for you or your little ones.

“Bring your swatches and paint samples because this will be your chance to see a wide variety of Serena & Lily bedding, from crib sets to king size,” said Amy Rutherford, owner of Red Barn Mercantile.

The show will run from 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. at 113 S. Columbus St. in Old Town Alexandria. Treats and beverages will also be served.

“I really enjoy the Serena & Lily product and I think my customers will to,” Rutherford said. “I also feel like we are sort of kindred spirits. I mean, here are two moms who had a vision of beauty and charm that no one else in the market recognized. They are always evolving, but also stay true to their core values and style-driven character.”

Serena Dugan and Lily Kanter released their first bedding collection in 2004 and turned the nursery industry upside down. Their bedding and crib sets are fresh and dynamic with color and pattern combinations that are sophisticated in their simplicity, timeless and comfortable.

Spring Arrivals

Wednesday, March 5th, 2008

Hello all,

The fruits of our recent NY Gift Show trip have been trickling in over the last week and a half. I was going to wait to unveil a grand spring redux of the store, but with the change in the weather I just can’t wait any longer. So, we are going to spend this week re-arranging the store and bringing out all the wonderful new things we found.

One of the new brands that we are excited to be carrying is Serena and Lily bedding. Their line spans all ages from infant to adult. You can see a spread of Lily’s house in the March issue of Country Home. The bed on page 62 will be in the store if you want to see it. We bought that set in a twin size, but as you can see it comes in larger sizes. Very exciting!

Also in the March issue of Country Living, you will find our Elizabeth Allen bedding – page 22 – and one of our pendant lamps on page 44. In the spirit of full disclosure, we don’t have that particular pendant, but we do have several pieces from that company and can order the one hanging in that great bathroom. I love the salvaged door they used. Fantastic!

Now, don’t worry, we haven’t forgotten to increase our stock of antique and vintage items. I just went antiquing this week and found some wonderful things. A couple of my favorite finds are vintage 1960’s school charts. The charts are enormous and would hang beautifully in a playroom or a dining room. One is of the World and the other is black and has two skeletons. And if that wasn’t cool enough, you can write on the skeletons with chalk. It’s educational art! (For inspiration, check out O Home on page 50. There you can see how one genius used smaller versions. Who knew they’d make great shades?!)

My other favorite find is a folding bench that used to comfort waiting passengers at a small West Virginian railroad station. It seats five and folds flat. It is remarkably unique and would be perfect on a porch or in a sunroom. This piece needs a little TLC, but expect it in the store soon. You don’t have to wait on the school charts though. They are already in.

I hope you will come in and see what is new. Please excuse our mess, however, as we make way for Spring.

See you soon, Amy

PS – our spring furniture should be arriving in 10 to 12 days. Just depends on how quickly the truck can make it here from LA. We’ll let you know when it arrives!
