Our Good. Works. Wednesday (GWW) efforts are going strong! Finding local charities to support each month has reignited our love and appreciation for our community and the hard work so many people are doing behind the scenes. If you’re unfamiliar with GWW, it’s really very simple. 20% of all non-custom sales at Penny Post and Red Barn Mercantile on any given Wednesday will be donated to a nonprofit organization. We spotlight a different charity every Wednesday.

Throughout August, we’ll be donating to charities that work to support animal welfare. Every Wednesday in August, 20% of sales will be donated to the following organizations.

August 3: Operation Paws for Homes is devoted to the rescue, rehabilitation and placement of dogs and cats who have overcome great odds and deserve wonderful, caring forever homes.

August 10: King Street Cats is proud to be the only all-volunteer, cat-exclusive, no-kill rescue facility in Alexandria. Their mission is to provide a safe haven until the cats in their care find forever homes, and to educate and assist the community in regard to cat welfare.

August 17: The Animal Welfare League of Alexandria (AWLA) has been a resource for our community and a shelter for homeless animals since 1946. Through adoptions, spay and neuter assistance, education, community service and outreach, the AWLA plays a key role in promoting responsible pet care across Northern Virginia. The AWLA works with the City of Alexandria to provide animal care, control, protection and sheltering services. They care for more than 2,000 animals per year, including dogs, cats, rabbits, guinea pigs, birds, iguanas and chinchillas. Their specially-trained staff also assist area wildlife that have been injured or are in distress, with the ultimate goal of releasing them back into their natural habitat or transferring them to licensed wildlife rehabilitators for care and eventual release.

August 24: Tails High is a foster home-based cat rescue and adoption organization founded and staffed by compassionate volunteers who find joy in placing stray, abandoned, or homeless cats and kittens in permanent loving homes. Tails High is dedicated to helping both rescued cats and their human families by providing wonderful cats to people looking for a sympathetic ear and a soft purr.

August 31: The Little Black Dog Rescue Group works to help abandoned, mistreated, or abused dogs find the best possible home in the DMV regardless of breed, color, or size. They strive to achieve this goal with compassion, transparency, and a strong sense of responsibility to their dogs, applicants, volunteers, foster families, and supporters.
